Day 2

Nashville legends and a chocolate factory

Shrug off your jetlag with a lie-in before heading to the Fontanel Mansion for a private tour of the former home of country music megastar Barbara Mandrell. Wander around the 33,000 square-foot log cabin with all the rustic charm you’d expect from country royalty. Afterwards enjoy a Nashville speciality: GooGoo Clusters. This local delicacy combines chocolate, caramel, marshmallow and peanuts  – and you’ll be savouring it with an exclusive chocolate and wine tasting at the GooGoo chocolate factory. Tuck in and enjoy: it’s education, after all. The rest of the afternoon is yours. You could check out the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium or the Johnny Cash Museum. History buffs should see the Ancient Greek Parthenon replica and for anyone feeling peckish, Hattie B’s is calling for some Nashville hot chicken. Come evening, hit up the Honky Tonk Highway – the live music here is not to be missed.

Day 3

Balconies, barbeques and Beale Street

After soaking up the country music of Nashville, next come blues and rock ‘n’ roll in Memphis, the hometown of Elvis. We’ll kick things off with a walk around the vibrant streets, soaking in the energy of the city. Grab some of Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken for lunch before checking into your hotel. We’ll then visit the Lorraine Motel, seeing the infamous balcony of Room 306 where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968. Now the National Civil Rights Museum, you’ll learn all about the rich history and acts of courage associated with America’s game-changing movement. For dinner, get ready for a smokin’ barbecue – Memphis style. Tuck into sizzling pulled pork and dry-rubbed ribs with your fellow Flashpackers, experiencing the lip-smacking flavours of an authentic Memphis barbecue (with veggie options on-hand, too). This morning we’ll embrace all things Elvis with a visit to Graceland, the famous mansion where the king of rock ‘n’ roll lived and passed away in 1977. We’ll immerse ourselves in the life and music of a legend on an Elvis Entourage VIP experience, seeing the gold records of hit songs that sold over one billion records worldwide. We’ll get exclusive insight into the Elvis legacy, with a look at his jumpsuits, pink Cadillac, and the place that he called home for over 20 years. The afternoon is then yours to explore Memphis, with your guide on-hand to give you tips. Why not continue your Elvis education with a visit to Sun Studio, where one of America’s most lauded singers recorded his very first song? Or, head to Stax Museum for a flavour of American soul. Day 5

Living it up in New Orleans

Today we’re leaving Memphis and cruising to New Orleans. It’s a six-hour trip through Mississippi to Louisiana so we’ll stop at Clarksdale to see the famous Devil’s Crossroad where Robert Johnson “sold his soul”, and the Ground Zero Blues Club, an atmospheric pit stop owned by Morgan Freeman. We’ll arrive in New Orleans as the evening kicks into gear. Freshen up at your hotel before we head out for dinner in the French Quarter. Our destination is Café Sbisa, one of the oldest fine dining establishments in town, famed for its French-Creole cuisine. Then we’ll head to Frenchmen Street, where the locals go for some of the best live music in the city, with everything from jazz and latin to reggae. Get those Sazeracs flowing and let your jazz-loving soul loose to the hypnotic improvs and saxophone solos. From basement bars to tucked-away hot spots, this is a bourbon-fuelled night out in the world’s most effusive party cities.

Day 6

A leisurely day and jazz-filled night

Today’s free to do whatever you please – and after last night, you might want a leisurely lie-in and pints of much-needed coffee. Then, head out into the city, soaking in the buzz of Louis Armstrong’s birthplace. We recommend enjoying the incredibly talented street musicians in the French Quarter, admiring the colourful floats at Mardi Gras World or mooching around New Orleans’ maze of quirky shops and galleries. For those of you wanting a spooky experience in this ‘haunted’ city, check out the Voodoo Museum or the Museum of Death. This evening we’ll gather together for a live jazz performance at the Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro. Let the sound of mesmeric melodies jangle your soul as live jazz fills this renovated shop from the 1800s. There’s a different show every night, with musicians flocking from far and wide to put on a dazzling display of hip-swingin’ jazz. Get the drinks in and bask in the rhythm of the night.

Day 7

Life on a cattle ranch

Bid farewell to the Deep South because today we’re hitting the skies with a short flight to Texas – the home of super-sized steak and the second largest state in the US. Touch down in Dallas, where your transfer awaits to whisk you from the city to the vast Texan countryside. Your home for the next two nights is a working cattle ranch set on 800 acres of rolling pasture outside of Grandview, Texas. Settle into cowboy life here, drinking in the vast open horizons and pleasingly rustic décor. This evening, we’ll tuck into a typical ranch dinner – think hand-cut, Mesquite-grilled steaks and other hearty fare – where you can feed up on Texan-sized portions ahead of an action-packed day in the Great Outdoors. In the meantime, kick back amid a chorus of crickets and take it easy as the stars light up above the ranch.

Day 8

Ride the pastures wild

Bask in the peace and quiet of your ranch, ready to embrace the life of a cowboy. Head down the dusty track alongside roaming cattle, before saddling up and hopping on horseback for a morning ride across the hazy plains. The ultimate way to travel here, feel every inch the local as you roam around the ranch on your charge and reconnect with nature. After putting your riding skills to the test, your al fresco adventures continues with an exhilarating round of clay pigeon shooting. Fuel up on a Texas-style lunch, before spending the afternoon as you please back at the ranch. Perhaps the archery lessons have caught your eye, or maybe it’s time to go hurtling down the zip-line? The nature trails all around also offer a great way to explore. Or you could always just kick back and take in the country views. A fiery Texan sunset is then the cherry on the cake of a spectacular day. Grab a few sundowners from the bar and drink in those epic horizons.

Day 9

The delights of downtown Dallas

Hang up your cowboy hat today, as we leave the ranch and head back to Dallas. There’s far more to this city than cattle-baron swank, so rev for a tour through its eclectic downtown neighbourhoods. After checking into our hotel, we’ll visit the Dealey Plaza to see the infamous spot where JFK was shot. We’ll then mosey on over to the vibrant district of Deep Ellum, a haven for street art and live music, with giant robots and great local beer gardens. Truck Yard, with its tree house bar, live music and food trucks, is well worth a visit, as is Katy Trail Ice House, for pitchers of Austin-brewed Pecan Porter served on a tree-lined patio. Come evening, toast the end of your adventure with a farewell dinner before hitting the town for one last night out with your fellow Flashpackers. You’ve embraced the nightlife of Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans – now let’s see what Dallas has to offer.
