Active adventure or chilled beach escape? Or, you could opt for the best of both worlds with our eight-day Costa Rica trip.

Think of this as an adventure of two halves. You’ll raft in and out of your jungle lodge, before ziplining through the canopy and abseiling down a sheer waterfall drop. You’ll trek through the coastal rainforest of Cahuita National Park and snorkel through striking coral reefs. But you’ll also relax on beautiful, white-sand beaches along the Caribbean coast. How’s that for balance?

Our favourite hotels

Browse a few of our favourite hotels, for a flavour of where you may stay on this trip

Rios Tropicales, Pacuare

Secluded lodge located deep in the rainforest

The only way in and out of this hotel is by white-water rafting down the Pacuare River. The ultimate adventure lodge? We think so.

Why we stay here

The accommodation and facilities are rustic and simple – which is exactly what makes it so special. Located deep in the jungle, you’ll feel immersed in the tranquillity of the rainforest: a true wilderness experience.

La Cameleon, Puerto Viejo

Small boutique hotel located right on the beach

Surrounded by lush rainforest, with hammocks and beach loungers at your disposal, this hotel encapsulates jungle elegance.

Why we stay here

La Cameleon is decked out with stylish facilities, a beautiful outdoor pool, a restaurant and bar, and looks out onto the Caribbean Sea. What more could you wish for?

Hotel Presidente, San Jose

Downtown hotel in Costa Rica’s lively capital

You’ll stay in one of San Jose’s most attractive neighbourhoods, with excellent access to the city’s bars, restaurants and parks.

Why we stay here

The location is a real draw, and the hotel itself is modern and trendy, with a vibrant artistic ambience. Minimalist, comfortable rooms and a patio restaurant provide a great place to unwind.

Day 1

Touch-down in Costa Rica

You’ve arrived in San Jose, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital. With its blend of colonial architecture and lively bars, there’s more to this city than meets the eye – which you’ll discover on your first night. Having checked into your new hotel and met your fellow travellers and guide, head out together to a downtown bar (renowned among the city’s mixologists). Here, you’ll learn how to whip up Caribbean cocktails over plates of tapas; the best way to get to know your new group.

Day 2

Raft to your jungle lodge

This morning will see you head over to your new hotel by the only means possible: rafting deep into the rainforest. You’ll embark on a one hour rafting adventure into the heart of the jungle. With rocky gorges giving way to verdant riverwaters, this is a region of pristine wilderness, untouched by the modern world. Upon arrival at the hotel, pull up on the banks and enjoy a welcome drink followed by lunch. Having settled into your new surroundings, prepare to fly through the canopy by zipline, with the Pacuare River (which you’ve just rafted) snaking out beneath you. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax and explore your new surroundings, before enjoying a communal dinner by candlelight.

Day 3

Waterfall abseiling and wilderness hike

Enjoy breakfast at the lodge, before taking a morning hike through the Pacuare Gorge. Your destination? The (aptly named) Wake Up Falls. Here, it’s time to take to the skies, as you rappel down a 60-metre drop from the top of the waterfall, with your journey downwards taking you beneath the cascading waters. After your morning adrenaline hit, return to the lodge for lunch, with time to relax before this afternoon’s activities. Then, you’ll join a naturalist guide for a hike through the rainforest, seeking out local wildlife in one of the most biodiverse countries on earth. Your journey through the jungle will end at a waterfall, whose inviting waters are the perfect antidote to a sweat-soaked afternoon.

Day 4

To the Caribbean coast

This morning, you’ll exit your lodge the way you came in: by rafting your way out of the jungle. Embark on a three-hour rafting adventure, with plenty of opportunity to jump overboard and swim through the fresh riverwaters. Then, this afternoon, you’ll leave the rainforest behind you as you arrive in Puerto Viejo – a vibrant town on the Caribbean coast. Nestled on Costa Rica’s south-east shores, just a stone’s throw from the Panama border, this is a true Caribbean retreat complete with soft white sands and tropical waters. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing at the hotel beach bar, with plenty of sunset cocktails to ease you into the night.

Day 5

Indigenous cultural exchanges

Today, you’re heading inland to Mishka Yorkin: the home of the Bribri tribal people. Departing from the village of Bambu, you’ll hop aboard a motorised canoe for the half-hour journey up the Yorkin River, before arriving at Stibrawpa, an indigenous village set amid cocoa and banana plantations. You’ll be introduced to the village by the community’s elders, before turning your hand to traditional chocolate-making and artisanal crafts. Lunch will be cooked for you by the local community, over which you can chat to the village’s inhabitants and learn about their way of life. Back at the hotel, you’ll have some time to relax, with the evening all yours to do as you please.

Day 6

Hiking in Cahuita National Park

We suggest starting your morning with an optional yoga session at the hotel, before heading into Cahuita National Park for a day of coastal adventure. Your first activity? Snorkelling through the lush coral reefs for which Costa Rica is celebrated. Spend the morning swimming at your own leisure – keep an eye out for turtles and reef sharks  as you go – or simply relax on the boat soaking up the tropical sunshine. Lunch today will be a traditional Costa Rican affair, before an afternoon hike through the coastal jungle – where you’ll uncover a world of abundant wildlife, flora and fauna. The rest of the afternoon is yours to relax, before heading out for a beginner’s salsa class. After familiarising yourself with its vibrant rhythms, master a few basic steps then you’ll team up with a partner to take your skills to the next level. Before you know it, you’ll be dancing into the night, with live Caribbean music and cocktails flowing for a true local experience.

Day 7

A food and culture tour of San Jose

This morning is all yours to relax on the beach and savour your last few hours on the Caribbean coast. Then it’s time for you to catch your transfer back to San Jose, which you’ll explore on a cultural food tour, uncovering the city’s hidden nooks and vibrant markets. Your guide will lead you through the streets via a series of restaurants and bars, as you eat and drink your way around San Jose. Dinner tonight will consist of traditional indigenous recipes given a modern twist – including dishes adapted from those of the Bribri community you met just days before. On your final night, your guide will show you some of the city’s best nightlife spots to round off your adventure.
