Day 2

White water thrills

This morning, we’ll venture into town to uncover the sights of Negombo Fish Market for a true flavour of local life. Observe as the fishermen lay the freshly caught fish out along the beach, leaving them to dry beneath the hot sun. Stroll through the stalls, absorbing the sights and sounds of a Sri Lankan market; from bartering locals to the chitchat of traders and fishermen. We’ll then make our way to Kitulgala, then check into your new lodge just in time for lunch. After fuelling up on rice and curries – the adventure begins. Prepare to tackle the rushing rapids of Kelani River, as we gear up for an afternoon of white water rafting; embrace the rough and tumble of the rapids as the river throws you around. We’ll then head back to our rustic nature lodge, tucking into a well-earned dinner overlooking the river.

Day 3

Abseil down a waterfall drop

Today, we’ll immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of Kitulgala, exploring its waterfalls, flowing rivers and lush forests. Navigating our way through the jungle on a morning trek, we’ll make our way to a secluded waterfall, where the excitement kicks in. Then, prepare to channel your inner daredevil as we abseil from the top, gliding down the face of the rocks through the gushing water. Lean back into the air, feeling the fresh breeze from the waterfall revitalise and energise you. After an action-packed morning, we’ll return to the lodge, where we’ll fuel up on lunch. Then, we’ll venture onto our next destination in the stunningly gorgeous Knuckles region. With rolling verdant hills and jagged peaks piercing the sky, it’s not hard to see how this vast mountainscape earned its English epithet. Settle into your new surroundings beneath the mountain stars, drink in hand – this is the break you deserve.

Day 4

Mountain exploration in Knuckles

Flashpackers, get your mountain boots ready – we’ll spend today traversing the ridges and folds of the Knuckles landscape. Known as Dumbara in the local Sinhala language, this is a region of eerie beauty and rugged intrigue. From its vast grasslands to rocky peaks, prepare to encounter a haven of blossoming biodiversity; the natural habitat of spotted deer, purple-faced leaf monkeys and mongeese – among many other species. Situated on the frontier between wet and dry zones, the mountainscape is shrouded in an ethereal fog, making for some epic hiking experiences – not to mention the incredible photo opportunities. After a day of mountain exploration, we’ll return to our lodge in time for a delicious dinner. Enjoy a drink with your fellow Flashpackers at the resort bar, against the breathtaking backdrop of the mountains.

Day 5

On the road to Kandy

After breakfast at the lodge, we’ll check out and make our way to Kandy. Boasting UNESCO World Heritage status, this city is one of the most sacred sites of the Buddhist world, as well as the last capital of the ancient kings of Sri Lanka. Once we reach Kandy, we’ll visit a local family, where you’ll get the chance to learn a few Sri Lankan recipes in an interactive cooking class. After lunch, we’ll head out to uncover the ancient city sights, along the banks of the serene Kandy Lake. Also known as the Sea of Milk, this iconic lake plays a major role in local mythology and folklore. Be sure to head into the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – one of the most sacred places in Sri Lanka and a major pilgrimage destination, housing what’s believed to be the Buddha’s tooth. Then settle into the evening, looking out at the mountainscape around you.

Day 6

Head into the tea hills

After breakfast at the hotel, we’ll start making our way into Sri Lanka’s beautiful tea country. Expect lush slopes threaded with tea plantations, and cascading waterfalls streaming through the greenery. Our first stop is the town of Nuwara Eliya; with colonial-era cottages and Tudor-style hotels, this was once the stomping ground of English and Scottish tea traders. We’ll take a look around this quaint little settlement, before boarding a spectacular train journey through the countryside. Once we arrive at the hotel, you’ll have time to unwind and settle into your new hilltop hotel, before we gather again for dinner.

Day 7

Lose yourself in the lush mountains

We’ll start the day in the Horton Plains National Park. Explore the gentle slopes of this grasslands plateau, until it plummets suddenly to a sheer drop known as World’s End. Flowing with rivers and aquatic ecosystems, prepare to experience a region of abundant fertile beauty. Horton Plains is situated in the highlands, meaning that the area is shrouded in the delicate mists of cloud forest. We’ll pause for lunch, before continuing to Bambarakanda Falls – the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Enjoy spectacular views of the thundering waters, before we hike our way through the tea hills back to the hotel. Come evening, tuck into a delicious dinner – you’ve worked hard for it!

Day 8

En route to the south coast

We like to keep things balanced, so after days spent hiking through the stunning highlands, it’s time to hit the beach! We’ll make our way to Sri Lanka’s dreamy south coast – prepare for soft white sands, lapping waves and swaying palm trees. It’s a long journey from the Tea Country, but the hours spent travelling will be well worth it once you hit the beach for a luxurious late afternoon swim. Feel the warm sand between your toes as you kick back for a deep chill, savouring these last few days in paradise before our trip comes to an end. We’ll dine at our beach resort, with a spectacular sunset over the Indian Ocean providing the backdrop.

Day 9

Beachside chilling

Today is yours to do as you please. It’s been a full-on itinerary, so make the most of this final day to take things slowly, as you unwind to the rhythms of the south coast. Embrace a laid-back pace as you explore a region known for its rural lifestyle, from coconut farming to the traditional technique of stilt-fishing. Historically, the south was harder for Indian invaders to colonise, meaning that the region flourished as the beating heart of Sinhalese culture. Today, this beautiful sea-swept region is peppered with ancient temples and spiritual sites, making for an afternoon of cultural delights. If you’re still raring for action, get stuck into an afternoon of SUP or river canoeing. Alternatively, simply kick back on the beach – it’s completely up to you. Come evening, we’ll gather for a delicious beach BBQ party; tuck into a charcoal-grilled feast as sunset floods over the coast, celebrating the epic adventure we’ve had.
