About your trip
If you want a fly and flop Egypt adventure, this isn’t a trip for you. If, however, you want to get to grips with this ancient country, then step this way.
Your dazzling Egyptian escape will see you sail down the Nile aboard a felucca, dine at home with local families, and pick through the ruins of Abu Simbel and Karnak Temple Complex. You’ll explore the pyramids of Giza and the mighty sphinx monument, kayak the Nile and rifle through ancient artefacts in Cairo’s Egyptian Museum.
We’ll take a road trip to Luxor, stopping off at ruins, temples and ending the day with a night-time visit to Luxor temple. And let’s not forget the mesmerising city of Thebes, home to Tutankhamen’s final resting place, the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, and the carvings at Colossi of Memnon.

Day 01 FLASHPACKERS, WELCOME TO CAIRO
Book a window seat on your flight to Cairo because you have a high chance of bagging your first view of pyramids as you fly over Giza coming into land. You can arrive anytime today and we’ll collect you from the airport and whisk you off to your hotel, where you’ll be based for the first three nights of your adventure through this energetic country. Your welcome meeting with your Flash Pack guide and group will be at 6pm, although we suggest getting to the capital earlier and enjoying some free time to explore this sprawling, frenetic city. Not sure where to start? You’ll get a good measure of the city just by pottering through the streets, where you’re as likely to see a donkey as a supercar. Tired? You could while away hours in the hotel’s spa and shimmering outdoor pool.
Day 02 GIZA PYRAMIDS AND BAZAAR BROWSING
Fill your boots at breakfast because you’re going to need a bag full of energy for today. First up, we’ll take a short drive to Giza to visit its famous pyramids and sphinx. We’ll tour the grounds of these vast pharaonic tombs and if it’s open, there’s an option to peak inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World, for an additional charge. Next stop is your chance to dive into the warren-like Khan al-Khalili Bazaar, where hundreds of stalls wedge into a maze of narrow streets, selling everything from gold and perfume to spices and fabric. We’ll then settle down for dinner at a restaurant in a nearby market, feasting on variations of traditional Egyptian cuisine.
Day 03 KAYAK THE NILE AND DINE ON THE RIVER
After an early breakfast, we’ll drive 30 minutes to Zamalek Island, the departure point for your guided kayaking trip. Expect a serene two hours paddling the banks of the Nile and gazing up at the city’s skyline, as you see the world’s most famous river from an entirely different perspective. Back on land, we’ll enjoy a quick lunch and make for our next stop, the Egyptian Museum. Home to a bursting collection of statues, sculptures, carvings and mummies, you’ll take a guided wander around the collections, with plenty of time at the end to explore at your own pace. The end to your third day in Egypt will be a memorable one, as drift down the Nile on a felucca, a traditional wooden Egyptian sailboat. You and your Flashpackers will enjoy an evening of classic Egyptian cuisine, while watching the riverbanks come alive in the glow of the setting sun.
Day 04 GET YOUR HAGGLING HATS ON
Today we’ll hit the road en route to Aswan. We’ll check into our hotel, before taking a boat over to the Temple of Isis. This spectacular testament to Ancient Egyptian architecture pulls together important and impressive hieroglyphics, pylons and carvings. It was built to honour the goddess Isis, and was moved – brick by brick – from the partially submerged Philae Island to its current home of Agilika Island in the 1970s. In the afternoon, we’ll pay a visit to the local bazaar – home to a maze of sellers, thanks to Aswan’s status as a market town and the gateway to southern Egypt. After the bazaar, the rest of the afternoon is yours to do as you like. We recommend paying a visit to the excellent Nubian Museum, which showcases the art and culture of Nubia, an ancient region along the Nile, much of which was flooded when Lake Nasser was created.
Day 05 SPECTACULAR ABU SIMBEL
Today we’ll be up early again, but we doubt you’ll mind the alarm call because we’re off on a day trip to the rock temples of Abu Simbel. For many, a visit here is the highlight of their time in Egypt. There are few sites as magnificent and breathtaking as its 13th-century Great Temple, fronted by colossal reliefs, which were carved directly into the mountainside (and then moved, in its near-entirety, to its new and current site in the 1960s). It’s a sight to behold, as is the interior of the temple, where the huge, detailed carved stone statues continue, plus fascinating hieroglyphics and murals. Later in the evening, you’ll experience an authentic taste of local cuisine with a home-cooked meal prepared by a Nubian family. This is a perfect opportunity for you to gain a local perspective into the history and culture of the region, as told through its people.
Day 06 SAIL DOWN THE NILE ON A FELUCCA
After your busy day at Abu Simbel yesterday, today we’ll slow the pace, having an easy breakfast at the hotel before spending the day on Egypt’s grand river, the Nile. This is your last full day in Aswan so we plan to make it a memorable one. Arriving at the banks of the river, we’ll board our private felucca and set off for a six-hour sailing trip along the river, crewed by a local Nubian team. Soak in this long leisurely pootle down the Nile, taking in the scenery as you go. Your on-board hosts will keep your fed and watered – just remember to bring some sunscreen.
Day 07 CANDLELIT TEMPLE VISIT
After an early breakfast in Aswan we’ll jump into our air conditioned van and head to the ancient sites and treasures of Luxor. After, we’ll drive onto Karnak, a mammoth plot of temples, chapels and pylons. An English speaking guide will take you round, explaining the area’s ancient history and pointing out the finest corners of this sprawling wonder. After a full-on day, you’ll appreciate some chill time back at your new hotel, before the evening’s excitement: Luxor temple. Most people visit this ancient complex during the blistering heat of the day but at Flash Pack we like to do things differently so we’ll be arriving at night, when the ruins are illuminated by warm lights, creating one of the most magical experiences of the holiday.
Day 08 TUTANKHAMUN AND THE VALLEY OF THE KINGS
It’s your final full day with us in Egypt and we’ll be making the very most of it by heading off into the Valley of the Kings, across the water from the ancient city of Thebes. Here, the arid hills conceal over 60 richly-decorated tombs of pharaohs, including Tutankhamun’s final resting place, which you will have the chance to visit. Your guide will then take you to a further three of the most fascinating tombs, and explain the funeral rites of the ancient Egyptians, and the significance of Valley of King’s paintings and hieroglyphics. Next up, we’ll take a look at the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, set in a spectacular natural amphitheatre. Our final stop will be the giant monoliths of Colossi of Memnon. Afterwards, we’ll take you back to your hotel, where us Flashpackers will head out for a farewell dinner at an elegant hotel restaurant.
Day 09 SAY FAREWELL TO YOUR EGYPTIAN ADVENTURE
Today spells the end of your Egyptian escape; it’s time to say goodbye. Banish the blues by riding high on the incredible journey you’ve just had – from exploring Egypt’s ancient pyramids and temples, to mastering your haggling skills at local bazaars and navigating your way down the mighty River Nile via felucca and kayak. After all that, we think you deserve a lazy breakfast at your hotel, and the next stop of your voyage is up to you.
