Your Itinerary

  • Day 01 HOLA, MEXICO

    Card image

Welcome to Mexico City, the most populous city in North America and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world. Check into your hotel, then you’ll meet your fellow travellers and guide before heading out for welcome drinks. You’ll then dine in a downtown restaurant, enjoying traditional dishes (and perhaps a shot of tequila) with your companions.

  • Day 02 STREET FOOD, TEQUILA AND WRESTLING

    Card image

Start your morning with a relaxing walk around Chapultepec Park, with a couple of stops to sample local Mexican bites. Then, head to San Juan Market in Zócalo Square, where you’ll spend the next six hours eating your way through the stalls, with everything from garnachas to chipotle chillies on offer. A tequila master will talk you through three different tequilas, all distilled according to local traditions. This evening, you’ll witness a Lucha Libre wrestling show – one of the nation’s favourite sports. Watch as masked men fight to keep their identity a secret and wrestle in acrobatic displays of strength, in this classic match of heroes versus villains.

  • Day 03 LUNCH ABOARD A TRAJINERA

    Card image

This morning will see you explore the beautiful streets of Coyoacan. Lined with restaurants, bars and galleries, this bohemian district is renowned as the neighbourhood of Frida Kahlo. Continue your exploration of the city in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Xochimilco on the outskirts of Mexico City, where hundreds of brightly decorated boats create a spectacle of colour. Then, you’re in for a quintessential Xochimilco experience, with lunch aboard a trajinera boat. Enjoy a classic Mexican meal, as musicians and food vendors sail past. Back in Mexico City centre, the afternoon is yours to explore at leisure. Dinner tonight will be at a local cantina, for a taste of evening life in Mexico City.

  • Day 04 Cultural sights in Puebla

    Card image

Today, you’re heading three hours east to the historic city of Puebla. En route, you’ll pause to explore Cholula, home to the largest pyramid in the world. Take a guided tour inside the pyramid, exploring labyrinthine tunnels steeped in Aztec history. Then, it’s onto Puebla, which you’ll explore on an afternoon walking tour through the cathedrals, palaces and temples that make up the city. Pay a visit to the Calle de los Dulces (the Street of Sweets) where you’ll find rows of stores selling traditional Mexican treats. Dinner will be enjoyed at a traditional restaurant, with dishes served in Poblano pottery.

  • Day 05 ONWARDS TO OAXACA

    Card image

This morning, head four hours south to Oaxaca – the culinary capital of Mexico. Set amid the mountains, this charming city is filled with gastronomic traditions and endless street food options. Find your bearings with an introductory walking tour, weaving through stalls selling local handicrafts and vibrant street food. Then, as evening falls, head to a nearby brewery to sample some of the region’s finest beers, before taking your pick from the many restaurants of Oaxaca tonight.

  • Day 06 Hike the Sierra Norte

    Card image

Today’s agenda: hiking the Sierra Norte mountains around Oaxaca. Spend the morning exploring this rolling mountainscape of dense woodland and rocky peaks, with epic views of the valleys below. If the weather is clear, you may catch a glimpse of the volcanic Pico de Orizaba or Citlaltepetl, the highest mountain in Mexico. Lunch will be traditional affair, consisting of local dishes and enjoyed alongside the community of Benito Juarez. Back in Oaxaca, the afternoon is all yours.

  • Day 07 LEARN TO COOK LIKE A LOCAL

    Card image

This morning is all about learning how to cook like a local. Start by heading to Sanchez Pascuas Market, where you’ll learn how to source the right herbs, spices and chillies; then it’s time to transform your ingredients into a home-cooked feast. The rest of the afternoon is then yours to do as you please. In the evening, we recommend heading out to explore Oaxaca’s restaurants and bars, enjoying the local food and drink scene with your fellow travellers.

  • Day 08 Swim near a petrified waterfall

    Card image

Today, you’re off to Hierve el Agua (‘the water boils’), the world’s only petrified waterfall. Unfamiliar with the concept? A petrified waterfall forms when water cascading over the limestone cliff calcifies over thousands of years, creating an ethereal frozen-in-time effect. This also happens to be a fantastic spot for wild swimming, with natural thermal pools forming at the source of this frozen cascade. Take the opportunity to swim alongside the only petrified waterfall in the world, before heading onto Mitla, an archaeological site that was an important cornerstone of Zapotec culture. Then you’ll continue onto a family-run distillery, where you’ll witness the art of mezcal in the making. Return to Oaxaca in the evening, savouring your final taste of Mexico’s culinary capital.

  • Day 09 HERE’S TO MEXICAN MEMORIES

    Card image

Your adventure in Mexico has come to an end. It’s over to you to make your own way onwards, and your guide will be on hand to help you arrange a transfer. If you’re interested in experiencing another side of Mexico, we recommend browsing our trip to the Yucatán Peninsula.
