Day 01 Uncover Reykjavik’s foodie scene
Welcome to Reykjavik. Upon arrival, an airport shuttle bus will take you to your hotel in the city, where you’ll meet your fellow travelers and local guide. Head out together for your welcome dinner, a three-course feast in one of the city’s vibrant gastro-pubs. Iceland’s gastronomic scene is in the midst of transformation, with a new generation of chefs reinventing ancient staples – think dried fish, smoked lamb and rye pancakes, with a contemporary twist. After dinner, we recommend sampling the best of Reykjavik’s flourishing craft beer scene with your fellow travelers.
Day 02 Hike an otherworldly volcanic terrain
This morning will see you visit a family-run farm, delving into Iceland’s rich culinary traditions. Here, you’ll learn about Icelandic produce, from fresh tomatoes to geothermally-baked bread, before venturing onto Thingvellir National Park. We’re talking about an otherworldly terrain, where shifting tectonic plates have created a vast fissure in the earth’s surface, now home to rivers and lush valleys. We’ll take you deeper yet into this volcanic landscape, where you’ll see bubbling geysers and hot springs piercing the open wilderness. As evening falls, head onto your glamping site, where your boutique tent awaits you. Relax with breathtaking views of the black desert tundra unfolding beneath you – a spectacular way to spend a wild summer’s evening.
Day 03 Navigate the Valley of Thor
After a light breakfast and coffee, you’re off into Thorsmork for a full day of hiking. Located in Iceland’s rugged highlands, this cavernous valley is named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder. We’re taking you off-grid into one of Iceland’s remotest parts, and the only way to reach it is by 4×4. Sip a hot mug of tea (or whiskey) to warm up before a long hike, then you’ll spend a good six hours hiking through the valley. Explore a landscape that lives up to its majestic namesake, where three glacial rivers course through black deserts, shielded by sheer, volcanic glaciers in all directions. After a full-day hiking experience, enjoy a replenishing dinner buffet at the glamping site, before gathering around a bonfire in the evening sunshine. Then, why not soothe your muscles after a day of hiking with a dip in the hotel’s hot springs?
Day 04 Canyons, rivers and waterfalls
Start the day with a gentle hike into Stakkholtsgja Canyon. Situated at the entrance to Thorsmork, this beautiful, hidden ravine is the gateway into the valley. Immerse yourself in the wilderness, with birds fluttering overhead and fresh mountain water flowing through the streams. Then, you’ll head onto Seljalandsfoss waterfall, located on the road to Reykjavik. Admire the sight of the waters thundering over green cliffs; in winter, this is an icy barren landscape, yet summer brings a lush beauty to the area. In the afternoon, we’ll take you back to Reykjavik, where the rest of the day is yours to explore the city as you please.
Day 05 Geothermal relaxation in the Blue Lagoon
Enjoy your final breakfast buffet at the hotel, before savoring one final memorable experience. You’re off to the Blue Lagoon, a unique geothermal spa built into an ancient lava field in the Reykjanes Peninsula. An immersive thermal healing experience, it’s a relaxing way to round off an action-packed adventure. It’s then time for your group transfer back to the airport, where it’s over to you to make your own way onwards. Intrigued by Iceland in winter? Take a look at our bestselling itinerary here.
