DAY BY DAY
Day 01 DIVE INTO DELHI
Namaste and welcome to India! Arrive before 2pm and your driver will be waiting for you as you step off the plane, ready to whizz you straight to your first hotel. This afternoon there will be a quick group briefing to meet your guide and Flash Pack family who you’ll be adventuring through this dizzying landscape with. Once you’ve got familiar with your new crew, we suggest you seize the day and get out to explore the vibrant chaos of Delhi. Its frenetic sounds, smells and sights will be an awesome shock to the system, so dive right in! Immerse yourself in the riot of activity for as long as your jet lag can handle, then cool off by lounging by the hotel pool. In the evening, we’ll gather for dinner at a cool local restaurant for your first real taste of Indian food.
Day 02 RICKSHAWS AND STREET FOOD
We’ll only be having a light breakfast this morning. Trust us on this – you need to leave room for the epic food safari we’re taking you on around Old Delhi. Prepare to have your mind and tastebuds blown as you weave through the city’s spice-infused alleys and market stalls, experiencing urban India at its most intoxicating (watch out for those monkeys, cows and rickshaws though!). This is a veritable fiesta of flavour and colour, as we veer off the tourist trail to discover Delhi’s culinary secrets. Then for lunch, come pull up a pew at the palace of Heritage Haveli and savour the delights of Indian cuisine in this magical setting. Afterwards we’re heading to the stunning Sikh temple of Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, one of Delhi’s most mesmerising sights. The evening is then yours to do whatever you like in this lively city.
Day 03 YOUR PALACE AWAITS IN JAIPUR
After breakfast wave goodbye to Delhi and get on the road to Jaipur – a five-hour experience not for the fainthearted! Forget what you knew about roads, and expect fellow traffic-weavers to come in the shape of cows and camels alongside Bollywood-blaring trucks, cars and revving motorcycles. Arrive in Jaipur ready to feel like royalty, as you check in to your exquisite palace hotel. Spend the rest of the day soaking in the rays by the pool, and exploring the decadent interiors and beautifully carved balconies of this unique retreat, which was once the country pad of an Old Jaipur nobleman. As well as the pool, there’s also Ayurvedic massage, yoga and meditation sessions available, or you could take a mooch around the pristine palace gardens. Alternatively, grab a glass of saffron-colored Chandrahas – a herbal liquor unique to Jaipur – while soaking in the majestic décor of your new home. You won’t ever want to leave.
Day 04 TEMPLE RITUALS AND THE MONKEYS OF AMBER FORT
It may be an early rise this morning, but you’re in for a totally unique experience with a visit to the Krishna Temple. The showing of the gods (with the Hindu ritual of arti) is a moving sight to behold, full of chanting locals, oil lamps and colorful vibrancy. We’ll return to the hotel for breakfast, before exploring the delights of the historic Pink City on a morning walkabout. Wander between the ancient terracotta buildings in the walled center, from the regal City Palace to Hawa Mahal with its 953 intricate windows. In the afternoon, we’ll make a beeline for the majestic Amber Fort, famous for its mirror-clad rooms, elaborate marble halls and sun-kissed turrets. Even the setting of this fairy-tale treat is quite spectacular, with the golden architecture of the fort reflected in the waters of Maota Lake. You’ll also find some cheeky local monkeys here, just itching to photobomb your selfies.
Day 05 Batman and an Agra sunset
Feature in your own road movie today, as we take a six-hour hour drive to Agra. Point your camera anywhere along the route and you have the perfect panorama for any Hollywood blockbuster. Speaking of films, we’ll take a short detour to the village of Abhaneri to see the Chand Baori stepwell, one of the largest and oldest of its kind in India. This evocative sight has been used in numerous movies from The Dark Knight Rises to The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Built in the 9th Century by King Chanda, it comprises 3,500 steps designed in stunning symmetry, leading down to a deep well. With the beautiful Hashat Mata temple on one side, this spectacular piece of architecture remains largely unexplored by tourists. Soak in the geometrical beauty of the place, with its pillar galleries and projecting balconies, before we continue on to our hotel in Agra. The rooftop pool is the perfect place to enjoy an ice-cold Kingfisher.
Day 06 SUNRISE AT THE TAJ MAHAL
If there’s one thing worth getting up early for, it’s the sunrise at the Taj Mahal. This white marble mausoleum was built in the 17th century on the orders of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, in tribute to his favourite wife. It changes colour throughout the day and in the pre-dawn light, you can see the ornate minarets glow a pearly pink. As the night mist clears and the sun begins to rise, watch the sky turn fiery red as you take in one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. We’ll then return to the hotel for breakfast before the three-hour drive back to Delhi. Here, a flavour-packed feast awaits you at a local restaurant. Tuck into your last curry in India before setting out for the Himalayas. Savour the spicy flavours and eat as much as you can in this foodie capital; you’ll need plenty of sustenance for the mountain-trekking ahead.
Day 07 NEXT UP, NEPAL
Today, we’re leaving the hubbub of India behind but don’t be sad – because we’re heading straight for the zen hills of Nepal. The two countries may be neighbors yet they’re remarkably different, with the chaos of India perfectly complemented by the calmer ambiance of its northern sister. Most companies would take a bus across the border, but we travel in style with two much shorter domestic flights. We’ll fly to Kathmandu first, and then catch a connecting flight to Pokhara, the gateway to the Himalayas (around three hours in total). Check into your serene lakeside hotel, which comes with an outdoor swimming pool, peace pagoda and foot massage service. Make the most of the pampering and while away hours looking out to the mirror-still Phewa Lake. With fishing boats put-putting across the waters and paragliders floating down from the peaks, breathe in the tranquil mountain vibes.
Day 08 TOUCH THE SKY ON A TREK TO DHAMPUS
After a hearty breakfast, we’re making the most of this trek-tastic destination. Today’s three-hour hiking excursion up Nepal’s imposing mountains will see you make like Kanye and touch the sky in Dhampus. This hike is true soup for the soul, as you climb through hazy valleys and rhododendron forest, catching a glimpse of village life in the high-altitude countryside of Nepal along the way. Your reward will be 360-degree views of the snow-capped Annapurna Range at 1750 meters above sea level. To top it off, you’ll spend the night at a gorgeous mountain lodge in Dhampus village, with a grassy terrace overlooking the Annapurna peaks. Grab a glass of raksi and watch the sun go down, with dinner on the pavilion. Then, see the night sky come alive – you’re probably nearer to the stars than you’ve ever been before…
Day 09 LAKESIDE LIVING IN POKHARA
This morning marks one of the most scenic breakfasts of your life. Knock back your coffee overlooking the hazy Annapurna ranges, and the lush tapestry of the Phedi and Mardi valleys. Afterwards, we’ll trek downwards to Phedi, weaving through emerald-green hills dotted with remote villages and swathes of conifer forest. Around two hours later, we’ll arrive in town, where a private transfer will take us back to our lakeside base in Pokhara. The rest of the afternoon is yours to do as you please. Rest your weary bones on the hotel terrace, and gaze out at the sun bouncing off the serene surface of Lake Phewa. Or, take a dip in the turquoise swimming pool. Still hungry for action? Why not hire a bike and pootle around the city streets? Or, take a boat ride across the lake, to see Mount Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range reflected in the clear blue waters.
Day 10 PUT YOUR FEET UP IN THE HIMALAYAN FOOTHILLS
OK, we admit it: we’ve worked you hard so far, with a jam-packed itinerary full of early mornings, city rambles and mountain trekking. Today’s a day for lie-ins, leisurely breakfasts and lounging by the lake. But adrenaline junkies, fear not – the heart-racing adventure continues. This retreat lies in the epicenter of aero-dynamic thermal action, where the warm breeze of the Seti Canyon meets with icy cold wind from the Himalayas. This creates a real hot spot for paragliding and other wind sports in South Asia. So, as an optional extra, you could spend the day freewheeling through the sky among magnificent birds of prey. Your call. Culture vultures, meanwhile, may prefer a visit to the International Mountain Museum, for a fascinating look back at epic feats of mountaineering in the area. There’s also Pokhara Shanti Stupa, a beautiful Buddhist monument that’s reachable by a short hill trek.
Day 11 RIVER RAFT TO A REMOTE SAFARI CAMP
After breakfast, we’ll set off to Damauli. Our destination lies in a stretch of lowland jungle, so far from the beaten track that it can’t be reached on wheels. This means a day of awesome river rafting lies ahead. We’ll have a quick briefing from the boat crew of the Seti River Camp, before hopping aboard rafts and paddling down the Seti River. This is a great opportunity to get a sense of local culture, as you see village life unfold along the banks. There are a few rapids along the way, along with lush forest and an abundant variety of birds. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch on a sandy beach, before cruising along to our charming riverside tents. Our safari-style camp is in the middle of nowhere, although there is a chef available to cook up a few well-deserved meals. Wallow in leafy hammocks or chill around the campfire, as you relish a true sense of escapism.
Day 12 FROM FOREST CALM TO THE FRENETIC CAPITAL
Wake up in your safari camp, to the sound of the whooshing river and spend an hour or so having breakfast in this deliciously off-radar hideout. Then, jump aboard your rafts, for a paddle along the Seti River back to civilization. Make the most of the time outdoors, because from Pokhara we’ll take a five-hour journey to Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. This drive offers some incredible scenery, so keep an eye out as we mosey through undulating river valleys, historic towns and winding mountain roads. Upon reaching the capital, we’ll check into our Tibetan-themed boutique hotel. The evening is free to do as you please. Head into town for authentic Nepalese cuisine (hello, thick lentil soups and rice-flour crepes) or shake off the day with a dip in the hotel’s rooftop infinity pool. Soak in the cityscape as you cut a few laps, or snap away for unbeatable Insta fodder.
Day 13 SHOP YOUR HEART OUT IN KATHMANDU
Enjoy a leisurely lie-in on your last full day in Nepal, before an afternoon of exploring the colourful city streets. We’re treating you to an immersive tour of Thamel, Nepal’s shopping mecca. We’ll also pop by picturesque Patan, with its labyrinth of temples, monasteries and ancient squares. Both districts are beacons for intricate Nepalese handicraft, from silver jewellery to wood carvings and brightly-woven cloths. Whether you’re after local pottery, pashminas or pretty wads of rice paper, you’re sure to find something to take home in Kathmandu’s vast mish-mash of boutiques, shopping malls and street stalls. Afterwards, you might just have time for a quick wallow in the hotel spa – after all, a head massage never goes amiss, and the sauna looks pretty welcoming, too… Then, seeing as it’s your last night,we say get the rounds in, and raise a cheers to your fellow Indo-Nepal explorers!
Day 14 A FINAL SWIM IN THE ROOFTOP POOL
After your magical two-week pilgrimage through India and Nepal, what better way to reflect than with a cocktail by the hotel’s rooftop pool after breakfast? You’re still on holiday, after all. Once you’ve booked the taxi to the airport, it’s time to return to reality. What a trip, though, from the splendor of the Taj Mahal to the snow-capped peaks of Annapurna. You’ve savored the street food of Delhi, and feasted al fresco in the Nepalese highlands. You’ve rafted to a remote riverside safari camp and met the monkeys of Amber Fort. You’ve trekked through emerald-green valleys and Himalayan hillsides. You’ve stayed in an ornate Jaipur palace and a retreat by the shores of dreamy Lake Phewa. You’ve been wowed by a heady mix of temple rituals, city tuk-tuks and some of the finest star-gazing known to mankind. Flashpackers, hold your heads high: you know what it is to be alive.
