{"id":14190,"date":"2018-10-10T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/flashpack.preview.uk.com\/2018\/10\/10\/can-adventure-travel-help-you-live-longer\/"},"modified":"2023-09-25T14:24:49","modified_gmt":"2023-09-25T13:24:49","slug":"adventure-travel-live-longer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.flashpack.com\/us\/solo\/wellness\/adventure-travel-live-longer\/","title":{"rendered":"Can adventure travel help you live longer?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cWho wants to live forever?\u201d sang Queen, over a heart-wrenching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mqhHgT4mvRQ\">montage in Highlander<\/a>, of the immortal Connor MacLeod watching his beloved wife age and die as he remains in his late Twenties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll be honest, it\u2019s not the best advert for eternal life you\u2019ll ever see, and probably highlights why most people would answer Freddie Mercury\u2019s question with a fairly confident \u201cnot me\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, however, the question is, \u201cWho wants to live longer?\u201d or \u201cWho wants to live to a ripe old age?\u201d \u2013 neither of which scan at all well to the tune \u2013 then you\u2019ll get a universally positive response. We get one life, so it\u2019s nice if it can go on for a while. It\u2019s also nice if that life is full of fun, nourishing, exciting and joyous things such as seeing the world and experiencing new things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Oman-group-adventure-01.jpg\" alt=\"Oman group adventure\" class=\"wp-image-14515\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is, the relationship between those two things is a conveniently mutual one: because travel \u2013 adventure travel in particular \u2013 can actually help you live longer, which in turn gives you more time to go travelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, my question is: \u201cWho wants to know how adventure travel makes you live not forever but longer and in a more fulfilled way?\u201d (Please don\u2019t sing that.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the answer is you, read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s a great form of exercise<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/roxanne-desgagnes-100477-unsplash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20413\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the bleedin\u2019 obvious, shall we?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, exercise is good for you. It helps your cardio-vascular system, it gets blood to your brain, it eases depression and reduces stress. It can be dynamic exercise, if that\u2019s your cup of tea, but it doesn\u2019t need to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><em>Read more: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashpack.com\/solo\/careers\/work-life-30s-career-crisis\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Less work, more life: tackling the mid-30s blues<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur research and lots of other research confirms that physical activity is one of the keys to a long, healthy life,\u201c says Dr Howard Friedman of the University of California, and author of <em>The Longevity Project: Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight-Decade Study<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPhysical activity doesn\u2019t necessarily mean exercise or going to the gym, although that is fine if you enjoy it. It simply means being up and out of your chair.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/filip-mroz-169103-unsplash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"The beauty of single living\" class=\"wp-image-20395\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Add in adventure travel and it\u2019s even better. You don\u2019t run marathons through the jungle; you hike, paddle, swim, lob yourself <a href=\"\/destinations\/south-africa\/\">down bloody great mountains<\/a>. It\u2019s good exercise, fun exercise, the kind of exercise you barely even notice you\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cViolent exercise isn\u2019t good for longevity, particularly as you get older,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.francescmiralles.com\">Francesc Miralles<\/a>, co-author of the bestselling <em>Ikigai: the Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life<\/em>. \u201cBut exercise is crucial to a long life and walking is the best exercise. When you travel, you walk and you don\u2019t get tired, because you\u2019re seeing things, stopping when you want to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It reduces stress and gives perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOoh, modern life is sooo stressful, isn\u2019t it?\u201d you find yourself muttering in conversation. \u201cSo much to think about, so much to do, so little time for the thinking and the doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is often said as you flick through three or four social media platforms, make note of the dozen films and TV shows you simply must watch this month, and send multiple messages to multiple people arranging to catch up over a few drinks. Thus making you your own worst enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>Read more: <a href=\"\/insights\/2017\/12\/12\/single-travel-group-strangers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reclaim your single life by travelling with strangers<\/a><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can sometimes think that stress is a good thing, that we somehow thrive on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an animal!\u201d you scream, as you complete yet another Christmas shopping trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that, to a small extent, is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But constant stress, or simply too much of it, has been shown to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/worry-and-anxiety-impact-longevity-2223983\">shrink our life expectancy<\/a>. Travel, however, reduces that stress, and not just through exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/marc-rafanell-lopez-639796-unsplash-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20411\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I\u2019m in Barcelona I have a lot of problems around me,\u201d says Miralles. \u201cThey could be family or money or the political situation or emails. Lots of points of stress. When you break away from this, you feel free. If you have no wi-fi, or even no phone, you have no choice: messages have to wait. You are analogue again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/adventure-travel-with-ed-stafford\/\">With adventure travel<\/a>, you also get to focus on something, a challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blocks out those nasty distractions and back-of-the-mind worries that cause anxiety (what Miralles refers to in his book as attaining \u2018flow\u2019). You can\u2019t mull over the state of your shoe collection post-Brexit when you\u2019re <a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/guatemala-belize-small-group-adventure-solo-travellers\/\">swimming with sharks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou get perspective, too,\u201d he adds. \u201cYou relativise totally your own problems. You look from a distance. Spiritually, if we only have one idea of how life is, we will be in conflict all the time. We will become angry easily. If you experience many cultures, your mind broadens and you won\u2019t be so angry so often.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You get an adrenaline rush<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/White-water-rafting-Chile-1024x658.jpg\" alt=\"solo weekends\" class=\"wp-image-15050\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Too much stress is a bad thing, but so is not enough stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have no stress, it can lead to lethargy, boredom and depression \u2013 all enemies of longevity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you\u2019re looking for, as you can probably surmise from that, is just the right amount of stress. This could be stress of facing a challenge during an adventure travel trip. And, according to Miralles, a short sharp burst of adrenaline, perhaps from <a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/tanzania-small-group-adventure-solo-travellers\/\">spotting the Big Five<\/a>&nbsp;or <a href=\"\/adventure-trips\/croatia\/\">kayaking down 8-meter waterfalls<\/a>, can give us a welcome kick up the nether regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Serengeti-Tanzania_safari-zebras-1024x658.jpg\" alt=\"bucket list\" class=\"wp-image-16149\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAdrenaline puts your heart to a very fast velocity,\u201d he says. \u201cIn some cases this can be good. When we have someone who has a feeling of depression, melancholy, of apathy, and is emotionally blocked, going to a place where you can get this adrenaline can be good. Those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flashpack.com\/solo\/travel\/prepare-for-group-travel\/\">travelling alone, with strangers<\/a>, might develop new social skills. It\u2019s human contact of the highest quality. When we\u2019re with strangers, we normally share good things, positive things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLoneliness is the biggest killer of longevity. It produces negative feelings. You feel anxious and abandoned. It\u2019s something ancestral \u2013 you feel protected by the tribe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It coaxes you outside<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be shocked to learn that human beings didn\u2019t evolve in the comfort of a three-bedroom semi in Worcester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn\u2019t crawl out of the oceans and straight into the local branch of Aldi, or learn how to make fire at B&amp;Q. Our natural environment is on the other side of brick walls and train doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/marko-balazic-253377-unsplash-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20412\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople who live long lives spend most of their days outside,\u201d says Miralles. \u201cThey get fresh air, vitamin D, the wind in their faces. Being outside stimulates our senses: our ears, eyes, noses. We\u2019re moving our body. Being in our homes shortens our lives. We have only been living in buildings a few thousand years. Our bodies and brains are not adapted to living inside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You get to challenge yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For all the cutting down on booze and quitting smoking and eating raw tender-stem broccoli between yoga classes that we (quite rightly) associate with extending our time on this mortal coil, both of our experts found one perhaps less tangible, but almost universal trait among long-livers: curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/recovery-techniques-1024x658.jpg\" alt=\"Recovery techniques after hiking\" class=\"wp-image-18490\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCuriosity is the one common factor in older people who keep young,\u201d say Miralles. \u201cIf they stay in their apartment, watching TV and feeling abandoned, you get old quicker. But if you\u2019re curious, you go travelling, you meet new people, see different countries, and make your body and mind work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen we studied people in Okinawa aged 95 to 105, what kept them alive was their <em>ikigai<\/em>, their wish to be alive. If you have things to do, to discover, people to talk to and places to go.
