There\u2019s a beautiful winter sun rising over the Thames, but it largely goes unnoticed because most people are in such a rush to start their day as quickly as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the urban environment we&#8217;ve grown accustomed to; a familiar scene on the daily commute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is undoubtedly due to the sheer number of people now living in cities.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/en\/news\/population\/2018-revision-of-world-urbanization-prospects.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the UN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an estimated 55% of the world\u2019s population lives in an urban area, with the figure expected to increase to 68% by 2050.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a society where time is money, today&#8217;s global cities are the epicentre of relentless busyness. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/carl_honore_praises_slowness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carl Honor\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> puts it: \u2018faster is better, busier is best,\u2019 and nothing confirms this more than a stroll through our city streets at rush hour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25767 size-large\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/cities2-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"London: navigating a global city\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The anxieties of the urban environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many urban professionals are busy to the extent that we don\u2019t know what to do with those transitional moments between one state of busyness and the next. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our trajectories through the city have become humdrum journeys from A to B \u2013 empty time that we fill with digital distractions. There are, in fact, strong correlations between urban living and internet-fuelled distractions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lonely City, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2015\/apr\/01\/future-of-loneliness-internet-isolation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olivia Laing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, puts it perfectly: \u2018As with the city itself, the promise of the internet is contact\u2026 But proximity, as city dwellers know, does not necessarily mean intimacy.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our phones become barriers we use to cocoon ourselves against the anxieties of the urban environment. They provide the perfect shield against unpredictable interactions with the wider city, and the infinite strangers who inhabit it. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By seeking refuge in the controlled safety of our virtual worlds, we lose our connection with the cityscape itself. While an unlikely source of inspiration for the global cities of the 21st century, we can salvage something wise from the figure of the 19th-century Parisian stroller. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an idle dandy, the fl\u00e2neur\u2019s only purpose is to amble through the urban environment at a leisurely pace, soaking up the minutiae of the city. A solitary figure, the fl\u00e2neur is the quintessential solo traveller. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What he shows us is that you don\u2019t need to travel to the other side of the world for an adventure \u2013 particularly when your own city is an unexplored enigma.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A simple way of introducing this into your daily life is to avoid taking public transport when locations are within walking distance. Even if it&#8217;s just walking to work, it reveals another layer to the cityscape and creates a stronger connection with your environment.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25796 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/cities5.jpg\" alt=\"Explore the urban environment at a leisurely pace\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Subversive city-strolling<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world of instant gratification, something as simple as losing yourself in the streets of your city doesn\u2019t seem to offer any social or financial gain. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;re so conditioned to seeking out rewards that we\u2019ve become desensitised to the slow pleasure of idle city strolling, of moving through the urban environment simply for the sake of doing so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring cities by night is almost an act of rebellion: \u2018In an economy in which time, including night-time, is money, wandering the streets after dark \u2013 when most people are sleeping in order to prepare themselves for the next day\u2019s labour \u2013 is symbolically subversive,\u2019 says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/mar\/27\/nightwalking-subversive-city-streets-london-matthew-beaumont\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Matthew Beaumont<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightwalking: A Nocturnal History of London. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Beaumont believes that it\u2019s at night that the full contours of the city take shape. \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 2am, in the empty streets, no longer fighting against the traffic of cars and commuters, the solitary pedestrian\u2019s feet begin to recall the \u201creal earth\u201d.
