Mexico: a Taste of Oaxaca

Experience a temazcal steam bath ritual, learn to cook with a Oaxacan chef & visit an agave farm for a Mezcal lunch & food pairing

Mexico: a Taste of Oaxaca

About your trip

If you’re searching for a city break bursting with color, flavor and the warmest of Mexican welcomes – this five-day escape has it covered.

In a place known as Mexico’s cultural capital, it’s only right that we dazzle you with a street food tour and chef-led cooking masterclass, uncovering all the stories behind world-famous Oaxacan cuisine. On the drinks front, a mezcal maestro showing off local distilleries is a highlight you won’t forget – not least given the finale feast, complete with mezcal pairings.

Speaking of standout experiences, a temazcal steam bath brings a chance to tap your spiritual side in an ancient Mayan ritual. You’ll also discover street art, bustling neighborhoods and some iconic Oaxacan landmarks (hello, Hierve el Agua). All this, plus gorgeous digs and a group of like-minded solo travelers? You’d be mad to miss it…

Your Itinerary

  • Day 01 Cook up a Oaxacan feast

    Card image

Flashpackers, welcome to Oaxaca. Framed by lush mountain scenery, Mexico’s culinary capital is brimming with flavor, color and creativity. From rainbow-hued colonial streets to the tree-lined Zócalo, you’ll find treasures at every turn. Your adventure begins at your oasis-style hotel, where you’ll meet your Pack Leader and group for a three-hour cooking masterclass. This fun, informal session is a great way to familiarize yourself with the region’s cuisine, as you get hands-on making memelas (toasted cakes), mole sauces and handmade tortillas, under the guidance of a local chef. Typical Oaxacan desserts and a welcome tipple are all part of the experience, too. ¡Salud!

  • Day 02 Street food & a temazcal ritual

    Card image

Start your day with a stroll to Cerro del Fortín hill for sweeping views over the city, and check out Oaxaca’s 17th-century aqueduct. In Barrio de Jalatlaco, one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, you’ll find cobblestone alleys filled with art galleries, coffee shops and color-popping murals. Street food in the historic center awaits, as you sample delights from the 20 de Noviembre and Benito Juárez markets (home to El Compadre, where chef Anthony Bourdain famously enjoyed the best pork tacos of his life), including quesillo (Oaxacan cheese), chapulines (grasshoppers), tamales and more. Later, you’ll take part in an ancient temazcal ritual involving a steam bath, indigenous chanting and aromatic herbs. Emerge feeling revitalized and ready for a free evening in downtown Oaxaca.

  • Day 03 Petrified waterfalls & ancient trees

    Card image

This morning, you’ll travel into the mountains of Hierve el Agua (“the water boils”) to visit the a rare petrified waterfall. Marvel at the ethereal sight of this age-old landscape, where giant rock shelves emerge from the valley amid cascades of calcified water. Make tracks for the weaving village of Teotitlán del Valle to see how artisans work their magic with natural dyes, and visit a local family who create elaborate Velas de Concha (Zapotec shell candles), thought to emit positive energy. After lunch, you’ll bask in the beauty of El Árbol del Tule, a 2000-year-old Montezuma cypress tree. See which animal figures you can spot in the evocative trunk (a colossal 14 meters in diameter) before returning to Oaxaca.

  • Day 04 Take a mezcal masterclass

    Card image

Oaxaca is known as the birthplace of mezcal, so it’s only polite to study tequila’s much-loved “father” spirit. Heading into the countryside, you’ll be met by a certified mezcal maestro (yes, that’s a thing) to discover the secrets of this centuries-old drink. You’ll visit two family-run distilleries and an agave field, learning about production techniques and, of course, sampling some of the good stuff. More treats await upon return to Oaxaca with a special lunch at a garden restaurant. On the menu: a feast of local dishes, each expertly paired with mezcal (there are 34 different varieties). From smokey and earthy to floral and fruity, get to know the flavors that distinguish this fiery tipple. This evening, still bathing in a post-mezcal haze, you’ll gather for a farewell meal.

  • Day 05 Hasta Luego, Oaxaca

    Card image

Flashpackers, we can hardly believe it but the time has come to say adios to our spectacular Oaxaca escape. After breakfast, you can make your own way to the airport – or you might choose to extend your stay a few days (the food alone is worth it). Alternatively, a few other Flash Pack trips in the region may tempt, including a longer Mexican getaway or nearby Guatemala, Costa Rica or Belize. Wherever you’re headed next, you’ll be fueled on by five days of friendship, fun and memories.

Our Favorite Hotels

Here's a taste of the hotels we sometimes use on this adventure. The hotels you'll stay in for your departure will be shared with you one month before you go.

Casona Oaxaca

Dating back to the 1800s, this former tavern once hosted the noblest of families visiting the city. The grand colonial-style rooms are set around a plant-filled courtyard in earthy hues of burnt amber, terracotta and mustard. Best of all is the location, just a block from Oaxaca’s main square, putting you right in the heart of the atmospheric old town.

Important Notes

Which airport do I need to fly in and out of? Plus airport code

Fly in and out of Oaxaca International Airport (OAX), also known as Xoxocotlán Airport.

What time do I need to arrive (in time for the welcome meeting)?

Please try to arrive before 3pm on Day 1. Your welcome meeting will be at 5pm at the hotel, which is a half-hour drive from the airport.

What time should my flight depart on the last day?

Check out is at 12 pm. There are no activities planned for the last day, so leave any time you wish. The airport is approximately 30 minutes away from the hotel and we recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before departure.

Are airport transfers included?

If you arrive on Day 1 of your adventure, or you book pre-tour accommodation with us, your airport arrival transfer will be included. If you book alternative pre-tour accommodation or are arriving by another mode of transport you must arrange your own arrival transfer.

Arrival transfers are private to Flash Pack and will be in groups depending on flight times. Sometimes this means waiting in the airport for a short while until other flights have arrived.

We don’t offer a departure transfer as Flashpackers leave at different times of the day and many stay for extra nights. We will offer you support with finding a local taxi.

What fitness levels do I need for this adventure?

We recommend having a read-through of the itinerary above, and getting in touch if you have specific questions on fitness. There will be a bit of walking on the Oaxaca art and street food neighborhood tour, but overall this adventure does not require a high level of physical fitness.

What will the temazacal experience be like?

Wear whatever you’re comfortable in for this traditional sweat lodge experience lasting around an hour and a half.

The herbal cleansing part of the activity will take place outdoors but you’ll also be inside a sweat lodge for group breathing exercises. This space will be dark and windowless, but there will be light coming in from the open doors.

Those with claustrophobia might want to skip this activity, but those who don’t mind will be immersed in a thick, healing steam as the curandero, or healer, stokes volcanic rocks with buckets of water

Will the itinerary change?

Please be aware that the itinerary, activities and hotels are subject to change. These changes can happen with little notice due to availability, poor weather, seasonal changes, or other circumstances beyond our control – but we’ll always do our best to ensure it has little impact on your experience. From time to time, we may also make changes to your itinerary to try out new ideas and keep things fresh and exciting.
