Why travel solo to Montenegro?
A microcosm of Mediterranean charm, where medieval villages, lofty mountains and a striking coastline converge, compact Montenegro offers solo adventures with some serious 'wow' factor.
Let’s take Kotor: reminiscent of a smaller, more lived-in Dubrovnik. This Unesco-listed town is a real Balkan beauty of winding cobblestone streets and fortified walls set within a mesmerizing fjord. Then there’s water lily-covered Lake Skadar, whose serpentine shores are sprinkled with family-run vineyards, inviting you to sample their excellent homegrown wine.
With a name that translates as ‘Black Mountain’ it’s no surprise that much of Montenegro remains mountainous and wild. The crowning glory is Durmitor National Park where craggy peaks, dense forests and pristine mountain lakes attract outdoorsy adventurous types for rafting and ziplining in Europe’s deepest canyon, Jeep tours and wild swims.
Such is the country’s diminutive footprint, you could go snorkeling in a sea cave before breakfast, canyoning in the hills after lunch and spend the night in a mountain village ready to start hiking the next morning. But with so much to see and do, why rush?

Bay of Kotor
This spectacular submerged valley made up of deep connecting bays opens out onto the Adriatic Sea. The steep rocky coastline is punctuated with pretty medieval towns, like Perast and Herceg Novi. Don’t miss the tiny island monastery of Our Lady of the Rocks or walking Kotor’s city walls.
Budva
Ancient history meets vibrant nightlife at Montenegro’s buzziest beach town. Explore the marbled streets and Venetian walls of the charming Adriatic-lapped old town, check out the Roman-era necropolis and soak up the atmosphere with a wander along the beachfront promenade.
Lake Skadar
A paradise for nature-lovers and wine connoisseurs, this vast freshwater lake straddles the border of Montenegro and Albania. Surrounded by dramatic karst mountains, its mirrored waters and wetlands play host to remote fishing villages, family-run vineyards and more than 260 species of bird.
Durmitor National Park
Impossibly rugged Durmitor is the jewel in Montenegro’s crown. With some 50 peaks over 2000 metres, the dizzying Tara Canyon (Europe’s deepest) and a liberal smattering of glittering glacial lakes, it’s a picturesque place for outdoor adventure.
