Day 2

Nashville legends and a chocolate factory

Shrug off your jetlag with a lie-in before heading to the Fontanel Mansion for a private tour of the former home of country music megastar Barbara Mandrell. Wander around the 33,000 square-foot log cabin with all the rustic charm you’d expect from country royalty. Afterward enjoy a Nashville speciality: GooGoo Clusters. This local delicacy combines chocolate, caramel, marshmallow and peanuts  – and you’ll be savoring it with an exclusive chocolate and wine tasting at the GooGoo chocolate factory. Tuck in and enjoy: it’s education, after all. The rest of the afternoon is yours. You could check out the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman Auditorium or the Johnny Cash Museum. History buffs should see the Ancient Greek Parthenon replica and for anyone feeling peckish, Hattie B’s is calling for some Nashville hot chicken. Come evening, hit up the Honky Tonk Highway – the live music here is not to be missed.

We’ll then visit the Lorraine Motel, seeing the infamous balcony of Room 306 where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in 1968. Now the National Civil Rights Museum, you’ll learn all about the rich history and acts of courage associated with America’s game-changing movement. For dinner, get ready for a smokin’ barbecue – Memphis style. Tuck into sizzling pulled pork and dry-rubbed ribs with your fellow Flashpackers, experiencing the lip-smacking flavors of an authentic Memphis barbecue (with veggie options on-hand, too). We’ll then head downtown to the pulsating Beale Street, where live music flows out of every bar.

Living it up in New Orleans

Today we’re leaving Memphis and cruising to New Orleans. It’s a six-hour trip through Mississippi to Louisiana so we’ll stop at Clarksdale to see the famous Devil’s Crossroad where Robert Johnson “sold his soul”, and the Ground Zero Blues Club, an atmospheric pit stop owned by Morgan Freeman. We’ll arrive in New Orleans as the evening kicks into gear. Freshen up at your hotel before we head out for dinner in the French Quarter. Our destination is Café Sbisa, one of the oldest fine dining establishments in town, famed for its French-Creole cuisine. Then we’ll head to Frenchmen Street, where the locals go for some of the best live music in the city, with everything from jazz and latin to reggae. We recommend enjoying the incredibly talented street musicians in the French Quarter, admiring the colourful floats at Mardi Gras World or mooching around New Orleans’ maze of quirky shops and galleries. In the afternoon, turn your hand to classic New Orleans specialities like jambalaya and gumbo – then feast your heart out on the fruits of your labour. This evening we’ll head out into town to uncover the lively heart of this musical mecca. Let the sound of mesmeric melodies jangle your soul as live jazz fills the evening streets.
