Undiscovered Georgia

Sip clay-pot wine in an ancient cellar, soak in Tbilisi’s hot sulphur baths & make traditional khinkali in a local family home

Undiscovered Georgia

About your trip

Ancient hilltop monasteries, soaring Caucasus peaks and a quirky capital with a story to tell… join us in the birthplace of wine for an intriguing five-day adventure.

Discover Tbilisi: an up-and-coming city on the eastern fringes of Europe. From the picturesque Old Town, shaped by ancient empires, to the buzzing techno scene that has it touted as the next Berlin, it’s a fascinating mix of old and new, East meets West, Soviet and urban culture. But it’s beyond the city where the true essence of Georgia awaits.

You’ll spend the day with a local wine producer sampling rich qvevri wine, prepared as it has been for millennia in a clay pot underground. You’ll be invited into a family home for a khinkali dumpling-making masterclass, and you’ll share a festive supra feast with a traditional tamada (toastmaker) – an essential Georgian experience.

In just five days, you and your fellow Flashpackers will soak in subterranean sulphur baths, hike to an incredible hilltop church and bike through the bucolic Truso Valley. And all the time, you’ll be asking yourself ‘why have I never been here before?’.

Your Itinerary

  • Day 01 Welcome to Tbilisi's Old Town

    Card image

Your Georgian getaway begins in the capital, where a Flash Pack transfer will be waiting to whisk you from the airport to your atmospheric Old Town hotel. Enjoy a welcome drink with your group before heading out to explore the maze of squares and winding cobblestone alleys lined with ramshackle houses, ancient stone churches and lively boho bars – all watched over by the fourth-century Narikala Fortress. As night falls, you’ll weave your way to a local restaurant to experience your first supra (feast), accompanied by folk music and dancing. Raise a glass of qvevri wine to the start of your adventure. Gaumarjos!

  • Day 02 Tamada toasts & clay-pot wine

    Card image

East of the capital, the Kakheti region is believed to be the birthplace of wine, with evidence of viticulture dating back over 8,000 years. Today, you’ll explore this ancient art with a visit to a traditional winery. On the way, you’ll stop at the fortified hilltop town of Sighnaghi – perhaps the country’s most picturesque town – followed by a special lunch with a local family. In true Georgian style, a tamada (toastmaker) will MC the meal with stories and elaborate toasts to love, health and happiness. Later, at the wine cellar, you’ll learn how wine is fermented in qvevri (clay vessels), lined with beeswax and buried underground. Naturally, there’ll be time for some tastings before heading back to Tbilisi for an evening at leisure.

  • Day 03 Khinkali making & a hilltop church

    Card image

After breakfast, you’ll head north on the Georgian Military Highway, built in the 19th century when Georgia was annexed by Russia. Cutting through the Caucasus Mountains, the views are simply stunning, with jagged peaks, lush valleys and quaint villages dotting the landscape. Your first stop is the Ananuri Fortress, a classic example of feudal architecture, overlooking an emerald lake. Then, you’re in for a treat at a local home where you’ll learn the art of making khinkali (dumplings), a staple on any Georgian menu. Fuel up for this afternoon’s hike up to the photogenic Gergeti Trinity Church, perched on a dramatic hilltop against a backdrop of mighty Mount Kazbek, before descending to your hotel in Stepantsminda.

  • Day 04 Hiking & biking in the Truso Valley

    Card image

Leave the highway behind, as you take a hike through the beautiful Truso Valley, dotted with ancient defensive towers, abandoned Ossetian villages and multi-hued mineral lakes that bubble with carbon dioxide. You’ll switch to two wheels for a gentle bike ride alongside the Tergi River, which flows all the way to the Caspian Sea. As you traverse the verdant valley, accompanied only by the sound of clear running water, you’ll learn about the region’s troubled history and why the villages were deserted. After a well-earned lunch, you’ll head back to Tbilisi for a final farewell dinner. Celebrate your trip with your new Flash Pack friends as you dine on modern Georgian dishes in a cosy courtyard restaurant.

  • Day 05 Sulphur baths & a fond farewell

    Card image

There’s one more treat in store before you head off to catch your flight: a visit to the famous Abanotubani sulphur baths. The historic subterranean baths are topped with Persian-style brick domes, some clad in turquoise mosaics, and are as much a Georgian tradition as diving into a plate of khinkali or sipping on a glass of qvevri wine. Soak and scrub in the thermal waters, ranging from 40-50°C, as you reflect on all the amazing experiences you’ve shared over the last few days. Important Notes

Which airport do I need to fly in and out of? Plus airport code

Fly into and out of Tbilisi International Airport (TBS).

What time should my flight arrive (in time for the welcome meeting)?

We recommend arriving by 12pm. The welcome meeting with your Flash Pack guide and group will begin at 3pm at your hotel in Tbilisi, which is 25-30 minutes away from the airport.

What time should my flight depart on the last day?

On Day 5, you’ll be visiting the sulphur baths in the morning so we recommend getting a flight that leaves in the late afternoon or evening. Your hotel is 25-30 minutes away from the airport.

Do you include airport transfers?

If you arrive on Day 1 of your adventure, or you book pre-tour accommodation with us, your airport arrival transfer will be included. If you book alternative pre-tour accommodation or are arriving by another mode of transport you must arrange your own arrival transfer.

Arrival transfers are private to Flash Pack and will be in groups depending on flight times. Sometimes this means waiting in the airport for a short while until other flights have arrived.

We don’t offer a departure transfer as Flashpackers leave at different times of the day and many stay for extra nights. We will offer you support with finding a local taxi.

What fitness levels do I need for this trip?

This adventure is reasonably fast-paced and requires a moderate level of fitness for the hiking and biking activities. However, the activities aren’t too strenuous and it’s a fantastic trip for those who want to make the most of their time in Georgia.

We recommend having a read-through of the itinerary above, and getting in touch if you have specific questions on fitness.

Will this itinerary change?

Please be aware that the itinerary, activities, and hotels are subject to change. These changes are rare but can happen with little notice due to availability, poor weather, seasonal changes, or other circumstances beyond our control – but we’ll always do our best to ensure it has little impact on your experience. From time to time, we may also make changes to your itinerary to try out new ideas and keep things fresh and exciting which we will always try and communicate to you.
