Why travel solo to Portugal?
The final frontier between Europe and the vast Atlantic, Portugal’s is a culture that owes much of its character to the sea.
From Porto to the Algarve, Portugal’s long, remote coastline is about as far west as you’ll reach in Europe. Here, you’ll find a culture deeply shaped by the sea, from its once-powerful empire to the melancholy tones of fado music.
Wander through the streets of Lisbon, where you’ll fall in love with its azulejo-tiled buildings and manueline cathedrals; there’s a faded beauty to this city which has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Further north in Porto, you’ll find the medieval streets of Ribeira waiting to be explored, with its charming wine bars and lively plazas.
Then, there are Portugal’s wild landscapes. Hike through Geres National Park, and you’ll encounter a terrain of verdant waterfall pools, fragrant pine forests, secluded monasteries and medieval bridges. The Douro Valley is threaded with vineyards, producing some of the world’s most famous wines. There are vibrant flavours to be enjoyed here, but we think you’ll love the kayaking, too.
Venture beyond the frontiers of Spain to encounter a culture that is just as rich and, for now, lesser-known.
