Beers and banter in Zagreb
Touch down in Zagreb and get set to dive head-first into adventure. Take a private transfer to your hotel, found slap-bang in the center of the city. Settle into your digs before meeting your fellow Flashpackers and guide for a whistlestop foray around sun-kissed Zagreb, to ensure maximum beer-drinking time later on. During a busy afternoon of sightseeing in this colorful city, prepare to enjoy (*deep breath*) the Upper Town, the Cathedral, the Stone Gate, St Mark’s Church, Ban Jelačić and other places of note. This is your chance to get a feel for the capital’s cafe-lined squares, eclectic architecture and air of Adriatic charm, before heading to one of its hippest bars. Here, we’ve laid on an exuberant beer-tasting session, where you can taste the difference between unpasteurized, unfiltered lagers and bond over lugs of local ale (or wine, if you prefer). Cheers your Flash Pack pals and salute to the adventures ahead.Read more
All aboard a kayak safari
After a big breakfast to soak up last night’s beer, we’ll head off to a family farm for another kind of tasting. Nestled in the unspoilt village of Točak, Novković factory uses old-school crafting materials to produce eight different cheeses. We’ll try all of them (it’s only right) before heading on to conquer Mrežnica’s kayaking territory, with its emerald, free-flowing river and remote woodland. Beginners, fear not – you’ll receive expert instructions and the waters here offer a good, safe ride. Immerse yourself in the wilderness as you paddle between thick forest and lush green valleys, stopping to picnic by a cascading waterfall. Leap from white cliffs, wild swim in natural pools and paddle over eight-meter drops on this euphoric afternoon jaunt down the river. We’ll then continue south to our hotel in the Plitvice Lakes region, a charismatic hangout with its own petting zoo (don’t be surprised if a few goats wander through the grounds… )Read more
Do go chasing waterfalls
Dial down to nature today on a guided amble around Plitvice Lakes National Park. Wrapped in a lush forest cloak, Plitvice Lakes is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in the world; little surprise it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. During a four-hour walkabout, we’ll discover sixteen terraced lakes joined together by almost a hundred cascading waterfalls. Ramble through this wonderland of emerald lagoons and sun-dappled falls, wandering down the wooden walkways that cut through the greenery for enchanting views and photo opps. Afterward, we’ll hit the road on a scenic two-and-a-half drive to the oranged-tiled coastal city of Split. Check into your chic hotel and bask in the outdoor jacuzzi, or hit the local bars with your fellow Flashpackers in tow. A glass of Croatian wine by the harbor is the perfect way to drink in the feel of this ancient and vivacious city.Read more
Beach time in beautiful Hvar
Today, you’ll have the morning to explore Split as you please. One of the Med’s oldest cities is packed to the brim with seafront cafes, boutiques and a rich sense of culture, all played out to the backdrop of the sparkling Adriatic sea. After drinking up the atmosphere (and a cappuccino or two), we’ll head to the port and catch a high-speed ferry to Hvar island, known as “the new St Tropez”. Mooch around the winding traffic-free streets of the hillside fortress town, tucked away behind 13th Century walls. Explore the elevated citadel, make yourself at home in a 300-year-old cypress garden or find a hidden restaurant in the shade. Of course, you can always make like the Croatians and grab some “fjaka” (down time) on the Insta-worthy beaches. When you’ve had your fill of island paradise, hop on the ferry back to Split and soak in the bar scene of this effervescent city.Read more
Farewell Split – and Dubrovnik calling?
Try and book a later flight out today, so you can join our last-day walkabout through the palaces, cathedrals and secret alleyways of Split. If the weather is on our side, we’ll wander over to the pretty nature reserve of Marjan for coffee and ice-cream. Hungry for more? We recommend climbing the striking Saint Domnius Bell Tower right by our hotel, as one final hurrah. Remember, you can always extend your adventure here with a two-night stay in the beautiful Hotel More in Dubrovnik; let us know and we’ll make it happen. If you are heading home, arrange your own taxi to the airport and fly high from your jaunt along the sun-clad Adriatic coast. You’ve kayaked down waterfalls and hiked through emerald lakes, discovering ancient cities and beautiful islands in Europe’s unsung wonderland. We don’t blame you if you grab your canoe and paddle off into the Croatian sunset. This is paradise, after all.Read more
