Top places to visit in Albania

Tirana

Once a city of dreary tower blocks, Tirana has transformed into a vibrant whirl of pedestrianised streets, lively public squares and colourful street art that are a pleasure to explore. Don’t miss the Bunk’Art II museum or the History of Leaves for an insight into Hoxha’s Stalinist regime.

Berat

The Unesco-listed ‘city of a thousand windows’ entices visitors with its narrow cobbled streets and white Ottoman houses climbing up the hill to its centuries-old castle. It’s a laidback place to sample some traditional cuisine and enjoy breathtaking views of the Osum River valley.

Gjirokastër

Located in southern Albania, Gjirokastër is an unmissable hillside city famed for its Ottoman-era architecture and UNESCO World Heritage status. A world of stone-roofed houses, narrow cobbled streets and home to the imposing Gjirokastër Castle – you’re promised breathtaking views of the Drino Valley, vibrant bazaars and unique museums.

Ksamil

Within striking distance of Corfu, Ksamil is set around a turquoise bay dotted with three small islands. It’s a popular place for watersports and low-key rooftop drinks. The nearby city of Butrint is well worth exploring for its Unesco-listed ruins dating back to the 6th century.
