Visit a Nubian Village in Egypt
Your Egypt adventure starts here
Meet local residents on a Nubian village in the Nile
WHAT IT'S ABOUT
Situated south of the city of Aswan, the charming Nubian village of Gharb Soheil bursts with colour on the west bank of Egypt’s Nile. Domed mud-brick houses are painted blue to reflect the river and adorned with intricate designs, from birds to trees to flowers, in bright reds, oranges, yellow and green. Inaccessible by car, you’ll reach it in the most breathtaking way: on an evening Nile river cruise with a group of fellow solo travellers.
The village itself is abuzz with life, from locals handcrafting textiles, jewellery and pottery, to families going about their everyday life. You’ll get to explore the village on foot, soaking up the cultural heritage and traditions that infuse the community, considered to be one of the oldest civilisations in Africa.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT
You’ll board the motorboat for an early evening 40-minute cruise along the Nile to the banks of the village. Your first experience will be a traditional meal in a local restaurant, feasting on tender tagine. Dessert will be oum ali (an Egyptian bread pudding), followed by Nubain red tea boiled with milk, cardamom, cloves and ginger.
From here, you’ll enjoy a Nubian village tour, visiting a local family to see how they live. You may be surprised to discover that many households rear crocodiles as pets and you’ll have a chance to witness this first hand. You’ll also have time to peruse the market stalls and take home one of the many handcrafted items or beautifully packaged spices produced by locals.
WHAT OUR COMMUNITY SAYS
Liam Baldock, Visual Lead at Flash Pack, visited this Nubian village as part of his Egypt adventure, noting that the experience was one of his favourite parts of the trip. “We arrived and were met by the oldest village member who showed us around. He taught us all about the Nubian traditions before taking us to his family home for a traditional feast. We ended the day watching the sunset over the Nile from the roof of the highest building. It was such a memorable experience.”
Flashpacker, Laura Baker, says the visit to the Nubian village was also a key moment of her Egypt adventure. “We were treated to a home-cooked dinner with a Nubian family who lived in the village. It was so beautiful and powerful to see this community of people, continuing to live off the land, as they did thousands of years ago.”
