Do you still remember life before March 2020?

I had just arrived back from an awe inspiring trip to Morocco a few days before the world shut down. I was elated. Unstoppable. With so many flavours and images dancing in my head, I was thrilled to have made authentic connections with people I never would have met otherwise.

Earlier that year, I randomly signed up for a two-week journey through Morocco.  Northern Africa was a corner of the world that had intrigued me since I was a little girl – listening in bewilderment to the tales of Arabian Nights and the adventures of Aladdin. But Morocco was uncharted territory in a brand new continent. I wanted like-minded people who would be up for the adventure—on short notice and with a curiosity that would match mine.

After a short search, I came face-to-face with Flash Pack.  I did some research and booked a spot on its Morocco adventure shortly thereafter.

Not that long after, a dozen of us flew in from all corners of the world to famous city of Casablanca. We met in the evening to kick off our journey with some amazing food, wine, and tales of adventures to be.

The two weeks that unfolded next were set against the backdrop of a cultural melting pot; the blue city of Chefchaouen; the majestic Atlas Mountains; the Saharan desert sky; Moroccan village life; the Fez medina and the intoxicating sense of Marrakesh’s markets. It was a kaleidoscope of color, aroma and emotion that quickly jolted me out of my normal routine.

Those moments served as a lifeline during the last year and a half in lockdown. When you travel, you take a part of a place with you forever. And you leave another piece of you there.

When I came back to the United States I felt a shift in me. The kind you feel after graduation day, winning your first trial or nailing that big work project – something you’re really proud of. I could never have imagined that the world would change so fundamentally in the months ahead.

But, in the year that followed, the reason travel and togetherness is so fundamental to our life journey crystallised into five undeniable reasons for me. Reasons that tell me (and you) to get back out there with others who share our curiosity and to learn and explore. This is what I’ve come to realise.

Travel creates meaningful relationships

The people you meet along the way can shape the trajectory of your life. As we were lying on the Saharan desert floor, staring into endless stars on a cold Moroccan evening, my new friends and I looked out into the big unknown until we drifted to sleep. It was sublime. Moments turned to millennia.  We were silent but there was much that we said to each other by living that moment together. Something genuine is born when your mind is in complete stillness aligned with the elusive now. A moment becomes a glimpse into another person’s soul and a mirror into your own.

New people, new perspectives

The way people in other cultures prepare food and come together around the table will astound you. As we sat on top of the rooftop in the blue city eating some of the best cuisine I had ever tried, I caught a glimpse of local life against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset. The strangers you visit in villages, the challenges you encounter on the way to your destination and the moments of fleeting beauty effortlessly give way to a new perspective. You feel a shift. You are humbled by the resilience, courage, and strength of ordinary individuals.  You recognise that we are all not that different.  And so the next crisis you find yourself in doesn’t quite strike you as that big of a deal.  You handle it with grace and a different perspective.

Togetherness moves you forward

The right travel adventure can give you a chance to reflect on where you’ve been and where you’re going.  We all come to crossroads in life. Many crossroads are external.  But perhaps some of the most important are internal – fought within the silent chambers of our own hearts. It is our struggles that play the biggest part in our purpose.  Travelling with others makes you realise that you’re not alone in your journey.  There is a comfort and courage that comes from that. Sharing moments with others and hearing of their own struggles pushes you forward in new ways.

New friendship, better health

We all have constant stress and tension in today’s fast-paced, modern world. An adventure with other like-minded people somewhere new forces you to slow down and reset. Quantity gives way to quality.  And yet you become more active – both physically and mentally. The opportunities for new adventures and friends pushes you to do more, try more, and be your most authentic childlike self. And that’s good for both your mental and physical health.
